With a weekend off from Western Collegiate Hockey Association conference action, the Lake Superior State Laker hockey team face off against the US National Team Development Program’s Under-18 team in exhibition action in Plymouth, Mich.
The two teams exploded offensively for six goals in a five-minute stretch in the third period with the U18 team winning the contest 5-4 in shootout.
Max Humitz and Louis Boudon had a goal and an assist each for the Lakers.
Dustin Manz assisted on a pair of goals for Lake State.
Miroslav Mucha and Pierre-Luc Veillette also scored for the Lakers.
Goaltender Mareks Mitens got the start for Lake State and stopped 10 shots in the opening period. Roman Bengert entered the game for the second period and stopped 21 shots the rest of the way for the Lakers.
Matthew Beniers had a goal and an assist for the U18 team.
Jake Sanderson and Ty Smilanic assisted on a pair of goals each.
Brett Berard, Chase Yoder, and Daniel Laatsch also scored.
Drew Commesso started the game for the U18 team, stopping eight shots before making way for Noah Grannan, who stopped 11 shots the rest of the way.
Smilanic had the shootout winner for the U18 team.
The Lakers return to conference action on Feb. 7 on the road against Michigan Tech.
