The Sault College Cougars played host to a pair on games on Friday night with a victory on the volleyball court and a loss on the basketball court.
The Cougars women's basketball team opened the night with a tough 53-46 loss to Mohawk College in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play.
Although Sault College hung tight with Mohawk for the game, the Cougars inability to sink their shots proved to be the difference. For the game, the Cougars shot 27 per cent.
Simone Taylor and Carly Uhlman led the Cougars with 13 points each. Lesley Thomson led Mohawk with 16 while Erinn Belot and Carolyn Carnac added 11 each.
"We had trouble hitting our shots and we didn't play well in the half," said Cougars head coach Randy Russon. "Early in the second half we were down 12 and I think we showed good resolve to come back and tie the game.
"We had chances to go ahead but we couldn't bury our shots. We missed too many easy shots and we turned the ball over 15 more times than they did.
"A loss is a loss whether you lose by 40 or seven but we feel a little better about this one especially because we played so well in the second half. We used our new offense and it gave us some looks and open shots.
"Hopefully we can turn things around on the road. We feel good about it because we have won two games on the road in exhibition play this year and it will give us a chance to bond a little more as a team."
In the volleyball contest, Sault College battled Mohawk to a close game throughout with the Cougars able to pull out a final set victory to win the contest 3-2.
Mohawk won the first set 25-19 and the third set 25-22. The Cougars captured the second set 25-15, the fourth 25-20 before winning the final set 15-10.
Desiree Simon led the Cougars offense with 13 points including six kills, five blocks and two service aces. Katie Headrick added 11 points on five kills, two blocks and four aces.
