Korah sweeps Husky hoop Classic

The Korah Colts emerged with both the junior and senior championship titles at the Husky Classic boys basketball tournament hosted by Central Algoma Secondary School on Saturday night.

The Korah Colts emerged with both the junior and senior championship titles at the Husky Classic boys basketball tournament hosted by Central Algoma Secondary School on Saturday night.

In the senior championship, the Colts gained revenge on the CASS Huskies with a 42-37 victory. Alex Seminuk led the Colts with 13 points while Christian Johnson added 12. Greg Rowlinson replied with a game high 16 points for the Huskies.

In preliminary play, the Huskies defeated the Colts 60-55 in an entertaining contest on Friday night.

The Colts, who finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, needed a 62-31 victory over Espanola in the semi-final to advance to championship game.

CASS entered the championship game with two straight wins to start the tournament. Following the win over Korah, the Huskies spanked Espanola 61-22.

In the senior consolation final, Sudbury Horizon defeated Espanola 63-60.

In junior, Jordan Murtonen with nine points along with eight each from Ben Ginter and Chris Casagrande led the Colts to a 46-28 win over CASS. Jeremy Hodgson paced the Huskies with 11 points.

Korah advanced to the final with two straight wins over CASS 49-45 and Horizon 54-21 . CASS later defeated Horizon 48-30 and Espanola 56-31.

In the consolation final, Horizon nipped Espanola 60-59 in overtime.

*** WEEK THREE:

The third week of action in the local High School Boys Basketball League begins on Tuesday with three tripleheaders scheduled throughout the city.

White Pines visits Sir James Dunn, Korah travels to St. Basil while St. Mary's plays host to Bawating. Midget games tip-off at 4:15 p.m. followed by junior action at 6 p.m. and senior play at 7:30 p.m.

*** COLLEGE HOOPS:

The Sault College Cougars women's basketball team was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women's varsity team of the week after gaining their first OCAA win in 20 years in last weekend's 57-48 win over the Algoma University Thunderbirds.

The Cougars returned a women's basketball program into the OCAA this season after a 20 year absence.
