Korah gains opening day sweep

The Korah Colts were the lone team to capture a sweep as the Girls High School Basketball League tipped off on Tuesday with three sets of doubleheaders.

Hosting the Sir James Dunn Eagles, the Colts defeated the Eagles 46-32 in the junior division contest before cruising to a 71-26 victory in the senior match.

Jessica Bauer with 15 points and Melissa Turco with 10 led the Colts offense in junior while Allison Marinich replied with nine points for the Eagles.

Kaitlyn Train paced the senior Colts with 22 points while Sarah Fortais added 11 and Sarah Levesque 10. Sarah Miller topped Sir James Dunn with nine points.

At White Pines, the Bawating Braves used eight points from Stephanie Leask in a 42-14 junior division win over the Wolverines.

In Senior, Ashley Clingen's 13 points led the Wolverines to a 31-26 win over the Braves. Amanda Whitmell scored 12 points to top all Braves scorers.

At St. Mary's, the St. Basil Saints opened with a 47-24 win in junior. Angela Bruni scored 13 points and Katie Huckson nine for the winners while Katie Babcock scored six points for the Knights.

In senior, a game high 18 points by Brittany Denneny led the Knights to a 60-45 win. Kathleen Thorburn poured in 17 points and Keira Favaro 13 for the Knights while Lara Stilin replied with 21 points for St. Basil.

Action continues on Thursday as Mount St. Joseph hosts St. Mary's in a senior division contest while White Pines visits Sir James Dunn and Korah travels to St. Basil for doubleheaders. Bawating will enjoy a bye.

Junior games begin at 4:15 p.m. followed by the seniors at 6 p.m.
