Korah doubles up on city basketball titles (18 photos)

Korah’s junior and senior teams will travel to North Bay next week for to compete in the AA NOSSA tournament

For the third year in a row, both of the Korah girls teams clinched their respective city basketball championships.

Playing against the St. Mary’s Knights in the senior girls final Saturday night, the Korah Colts dominated most of the game.

St. Mary’s went on a run early in the Fourth Quarter, bringing the score to within 8 points.

Gary Cormier, the senior Colts’ head coach, complimented the Knights as being tenacious and never giving up.

"Anytime you get to the championship game, teams are going to make runs. They got on a bit of a roll and starting hitting their outside shots," said Cormier.

Knight’s coach David Zagordo said his team’s inconstant scoring from the line may have made the difference in their losing effort.

"Tonight, if we would have hit a few more free throws it would have helped us chip away at that lead," said Zagordo.

Despite the loss, Zagordo said the Knight’s worked hard in the final.

“That's all that I asked is they put their best foot forward and they did. They worked hard right to the buzzer," said Zagordo of his team’s effort.

Emma Hendrie and Taryn Lamorie each finished with 8 points for the Knights, while the Colts’ Averi Bodnar scored 19.

Colts’ guard Tori Ivey was held to 9 points and left the game mid way in the Second Quarter after falling awkwardly diving for a loose ball in front of the Knights’ bench.

"Tori is is unbelievable. She is a warrior on the court. If the ball is there, she is going to go get it. She has done that her entire high school career," said Cormier.

Ivey asked to reenter the game, starting the second half.

"That's the way she is, she battles through injuries and plays hard. She's not afraid to go in there and muck it up, that's for sure," said Cormier.

In the junior final, Hanna Jodoin’s 19 points contributed to Korah’s 49-19 win against Superior Heights.

Korah junior girls coach Winston Ivey said tonight’s win was the best all year.

"We got better as the season went on. We actually lost to Superior Heights our first game of the year, but beat them the next two times,” said Coach Ivey.

The Colts’ goal for the city final, said Coach Ivey, was to wear the Steelhawks down on their home court.

"We could tell they were short-staffed, they only had eight bodies. Our goal was to make them uncomfortable," said Coach Ivey.

Saturday's win marks the fourth city championship in a row for the junior Colts.

“To be up by 30, you can see they really played defence and got it going on offence," said Coach Ivey.

Korah’s junior and senior teams will travel to North Bay next week for to compete in the AA NOSSA tournament, while St. Mary’s junior and senior teams host AAA NOSSA.
