Knights, Wolverines put on offensive show (Updated)

In the end, the St. Knights were able to put up enough points to walk away from Rocky DiPietro Field on Thursday night with a 55-38 High School Football League senior division win over the White Pines Wolverines.

Trailing 28-21 at the half, the Knights scored 34 second half points for the victory.

Mark DeVuono hauled in three touchdowns of 81, 23 and 46 yards from quarterback John Mullin to pace the Knights offense.

Michael Martens added two touchdowns for St. Mary's on a 19 yard reception and a 75 yard punt return while Jeff Greco added scores on runs of three and 52 yards. Mike Esson found the end zone on a five yard scamper and Ricky Lamon booted seven converts.

For White Pines, Gary Leith scored on an eight yard run, Darcy Rumble returned an interception 46 yards for a major score, Tom Hicks ran for an 81 yard touchdown, Jake Doan caught a 36 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cory Wensley, Jon Widgett added a four yard scoring run and Matt Santos kicked a 29 yard field goal to go with five converts.

Greco, who only played in the second half, led all rushers with 165 yards on 13 carries while Esson added 56 yards on 12 carries. Mullin completed seven of 15 passes for 188 yards including four to DeVuono for 150 yards.

Jordan Verdone led the Knights defense with eight tackles, Dan Perri added 6.5 tackles and 0.5 sack and Jason Amadio made 5.5 tackles.

Widgett led the Wolverines offense with 131 yards rushing on 19 carries while Hicks gathered 90 yards on four runs. Wensley completed six of 18 passes for 105 yards and Doan caught two balls for 65 yards.

Matt Ritchie led the White Pines defense with 7.5 tackles while Tyler Kostiuk added six, Matt Connors 4.5, Anthony Silvano four and Rumble four.

*** JUNIOR DIVISION:

In junior, Tyler Vernelli, Michael Maniacco, Adam D'Agostino, Brian Nanne and Mark Zagordo scored for the Knights in a 35-0 win over White Pines. Zagordo added five converts.
