On a windy, snowy night in Windsor, the high school football season ended in disappointing fashion for the St. Mary’s senior football team.

The Knights dropped a 33-0 decision to London’s South Collegiate Institute at Windsor’s Acumen Stadium on the campus of St. Clair College in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Western Bowl on Monday night.

It was the first OFSAA appearance for the Knights since winning the Northern Bowl in 2012.

After an unsuccessful field goal attempt by the Knights in the opening quarter, the scoring went entirely South Collegiate’s way the rest of the night.

The Western Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association (WOSSAA) champs officially opened the scoring early in the second quarter on a 16-yard field goal by Owen Williams just under three minutes into the quarter.

Andre Thompson added to the lead by returning an interception 45 yards for a touchdown later in the quarter. A convert by Williams on the play made it a 10-0 game.

The Lions carried a 17-0 lead into the half thanks to a 27-yard touchdown run by Kanye Nethersole and subsequent convert by Williams.

Thompson, who played on both sides of the ball for South Collegiate, extended the lead further in the third quarter with a four-yard touchdown pass to Chase Smith. The convert by Willliams made it 24-0 and South Collegiate led by a 26-0 margin through three quarters after the Knights conceded a safety shortly after the Smith touchdown catch.

South Collegiate capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter thanks to a short touchdown run by Nethersole and convert by Williams.

South Collegiate advanced to the Western Bowl thanks to a 22-7 win over the A.B. Lucas Vikings in the WOSSAA final on Nov. 17.

St. Mary’s captured the Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics (NOSSA) title on Nov. 11, two weeks after winning the city title over Korah locally.
