Junior Hounds finish strong in female playoffs hosted in the Sault

Twelve teams from Northern Ontario and Michigan came together for a weekend of playoff hockey

Twelve teams from Northern Ontario and Michigan came together for an exhilarating weekend of hockey as the Sault Female Hockey Association (SFHA) hosted the NOWHL Playoffs.

The weekend also featured a skills competition where players entered categories such as fastest skater, hardest shot, best stickhandling and goalie shootout.

“The SFHA proudly affirms that female hockey is alive and thriving in our city,” the association said in a news release. 

“This incredible weekend showcased not only athletic excellence but also the bonds of friendship forged through the love of the game.”

Sault Female Hockey Association (SFHA) hosted an exhilarating weekend of hockey during the NOWHL Playoffs. Twelve teams from Northern Ontario and Michigan competed fiercely, showcasing their talent and determination.

Championship Victories:

  1. U11B Soo Jr Greyhound Girls:  Another gold medal for our U11B team! Defeating the Thunder Bay Fury with an impressive 5-0 score in the final. The U11B team has now secured back-to-back gold medals. Fresh from their triumph at the 42nd annual Walter Gretzky Hockey Tournament last weekend, they continued their winning streak.

  2. U13BB Soo Jr Greyhounds: Our U11B team emerged victorious, dominating the U13 Division. They triumphed over the Sudbury Lady Wolves with a 4-2 win in the final.This adds to their collection of medals this season, including winning Boo in the Soo, another gold medal at the Whitby Tournament of Heroes in December, and a silver medal finish just last weekend in Brantford. 

  3. U15BB Soo Jr Greyhound Girls: Our U15BB team clinched the bronze medal, defeating the Traverse City North Stars with a close 3-2 score.

Beyond the Rink: Community Spirit Shines

The weekend wasn’t just about games; it was a celebration of camaraderie and community. Many teams attended the Soo Greyhounds OHL game on Friday night, rallying together to support our local hockey heroes.

NOWHL Skills Competition: Showcasing Talent

An outstanding highlight was the NOWHL Skills Competition, meticulously organized by Chad & Sarah Finn. Each team contributed one player for each category, demonstrating their prowess in various skills. The event was graciously hosted by the Sault College Cougars Women’s Hockey team. Players took to the ice to see who was the fastest skater, had the hardest shot, best stickhandling and there was even a goalie shootout competition.
