Junior Greyhound girls hosting finals this weekend at new arena

U11 teams include Sault, Kapuskasing, Sudbury, Timmins, North Bay, Hearst, Temiskaming

The Sault Ste. Marie U11 Jr. Greyhounds girls hockey team will host the 2023 Northern Ontario Women's Hockey League (NOWHL) U11 Championship playoffs this weekend, from Friday to Sunday, March 24 to 26.

The highly anticipated year-end tournament will see seven teams from across Northern Ontario vying for the championship playoff title.

Participating teams include the Kapuskasing Jaguars, Sudbury Lady Wolves, Timmins Falcons, North Bay Ice Boltz, Hearst Ice Cats, Temiskaming Shores Puckhounds, and the Sault Ste. Marie Jr. Greyhounds.

Round robin games will be played at the new Northern Community Centre on Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The semi-finals are scheduled for Sunday at 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., with the winners advancing to the finals at noon.

"We are thrilled to host this exciting tournament and welcome teams from all over Northern Ontario to our community," Sault Jr. Greyhounds head coach Jay Labbe said in a news release.

"This weekend promises to be a tribute to the passion and dedication of our young athletes and the growth of girls' hockey in our region."

The public is welcome to come out and cheer on the teams as they compete for the title.
