The Champions Cup, one of two Grand Slam of Curling events to be held this season in a shortened year due to COVID-19, came to an end for Brad Jacobs and his team from the Community First Curling Centre on Sunday evening.
The Jacobs rink dropped a 5-3 decision to Kevin Koe in quarter-final action Sunday night at the Markin MacPhail Arena in Calgary.
Jacobs got on the board with a steal in the opening end to take an early 1-0 lead, but Koe took the lead in the second end by scoring three and led the rest of the way.
Jacobs cut the lead to one with a single in the third and continued to hold a slim lead after the teams traded singles in the fifth and sixth ends.
Leading 4-3, Koe blanked the seventh end before sealing the win in the eighth end.
Jacobs got into the quarter-final thanks to a 6-4 win in a tie-breaker on Sunday afternoon against Yannick Schwaller.
Similar to the game against Koe, Jacobs got on the board with a steal in the opening end.
After Schwaller tied the game with a single in the second end, Jacobs took the lead for good with a pair in the third end before stealing one more to go up 4-1 through four ends.
Schwaller cut into the lead with a pair in the fifth end, but Jacobs got the pair right back in the sixth end.
Schwaller capped off the scoring with a single in the seventh end.
The Jacobs rink, which includes third Marc Kennedy, second E.J. Harnden, and lead Ryan Harnden, is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday morning in day two action at the Players’ Championship.
The Players’ Championship, the second Grand Slam of Curling event in the Calgary curling bubble, is scheduled to begin on Tuesday afternoon with Jacobs set to face Jason Gunnlaugson at 2 p.m. Sault time.
The Jacobs rink will then face Peter De Cruz on Wednesday at 10 a.m. Sault time.
It’s the first of two games on the day for the Sault rink as the team will face Bruce Mouat in the evening draw at 10 p.m. Sault time.
On Thursday, Jacobs will face Niklas Edin at 2 p.m. Sault time before wrapping up round robin action on Friday afternoon against Brendan Bottcher at 2 p.m.
