Overage winger Mike Amodeo scored a pair of first-period goals and the Soo Greyhounds slugged their way to a 4-1 Ontario Hockey League victory over the lowly Saginaw Spirit Sunday night at Memorial Gardens. The two goals give Amodeo four in eight games with the Hounds. He was also involved in a fight, boosting his penalty minute total to 49 since being obtained by the Hounds from the Kitchener Rangers. It was a rough and tumble game involving six fights and plenty of offensive activity as the Hounds outshot Saginaw 40-37. Adam Munro posted the win in goal for the Hounds, his eighth in 14 decisions since being acquired from the Erie Otters. Jeff Carter and rookie Tyler Kennedy also scored for the Hounds. Soo native Chris Thorburn, with his 14th of the season, scored for Saginaw, which lost for the 12th time in succession. MAVETY STEPS DOWN: In his 22nd season in the OHL, Larry Mavety resigned on Friday as coach of the Kingston Frontenacs. The 60-year old Mavety will remain with the team as general manager. Assistant coach Greg Bignell has taken over Mavety's duties behind the bench. Bignell, a Kitchener native, once played for Mavety in Belleville. Mavety was in his second tour of duty with Kingston. He also served two stints with Belleville. "I just felt it was time," Mavety told SooToday.com. "We've had a lot of injuries but I just thought we needed a change behind the bench. This was my decision totally. It'll take a while to get used to not being behind the bench but I'm going to focus entirely on being the GM."
While with Belleville, Mavety coached a number of future NHLers, including Darren McCarty of the Detroit Red Wings and Bryan Marchment of the San Jose Sharks. He also coached several Soo products during his Belleville days, including Ali Butorac, Todd Sepkowski and Joey Shunock.
