The Soo Greyhounds got their first taste of victory away from home on Friday night.

Chris Lawrence's first goal of the season 4:59 into the third period proved to be the winner as the Greyhounds held on for a 5-4 win over the Kitchener Rangers in Ontario Hockey League action.

The Greyhounds broke open a 3-3 tie in the third period with a pair of early goals. Before Lawrence's game winner, Jeff Larsh scored his fourth of the season 1:31 into the period to open the lead.

Patrick Davis scored just 1:09 after the Lawrence goal but the Hounds, led by goaltender Jakub Cech, shut down the Rangers for the rest of the period.

Jason Pitton, with his first of the year, Andrew Desjardins and Jeff Carter, also with his first of the year, scored for the Greyhounds.

Carter and Lawrence each added an assist while Brad Staubitz recorded two assists. Cech kicked aside 30 of 34 shots for the win.

Mike Duco, Craig Voakes and Evan McGrath, who chipped in a pair of assists, added goals for the Rangers.

The win improves the Greyhounds record to 2-5-1 for five points while the Rangers fall to 4-5-1 for nine points.

The Greyhounds conclude their two-game road trip on Saturday in London against the Knights at 7:30 p.m.
