The Soo Greyhounds are picking the right time of the year to get hot.

After opening a three-game road trip on Friday with a 3-0 victory over Saginaw, the Hounds followed with a huge 6-2 win over the Plymouth Whalers in an Ontario Hockey League west division first place showdown on Saturday night.

The victory allowed the Greyhounds to jump two points ahead of the Whalers and Windsor Spitfires for the division lead. The Spitfires have played two more game than the Soo and Plymouth.

With 12 games remaining in the regular season, the Greyhounds still have two head-to-head meetings with both teams.

The Hounds, who are now unbeaten in six consecutive games, conclude their road trip on Sunday against the Sarnia Sting at 6 p.m.

Brody Todd, the game's first star, had a breakout game offensively for the Hounds with three goals while Jakub Cech had a solid game in goal by stopping 28 of 30 shots for second star honours.

The Hounds jumped on the Whalers early as Todd scored his 10th of the season 1:32 into the game. Chris Lawrence followed with a power play goal with 58 second remaining in the opening period.

Just 58 seconds into the second period, Todd scored the eventual game winner to give the Hounds a 3-0 lead.

After former Greyhound Mike Looby scored pull Plymouth back into the contest, Tyler Kennedy scored with the man advantage less than two minutes later to take away any Whaler thoughts of a comeback attempt.

Todd, on the power play, and Jacob King capped the scoring for the Hounds in the third while Cory Tanaka scored for Plymouth.

Jeff Carter and Martin Tuma recorded two assists each for the Soo while Lawrence added anther. Mike Knight setup both Plymouth scores.

The victory improves the Hounds' record to 25-23-7-1 for 58 points.

Following Sunday's game, the Hounds return home to begin a three-game stand on Wednesday at Memorial Gardens with a return match against the Sting at 7 p.m.
