Hounds enter break after loss to Majors

After Jeff Larsh provided the Soo Greyhounds with a gift in the third period, he returned with a present for his own team in overtime.

Larsh, a former Greyhound acquired in a trade by the Toronto St. Michael's Majors for Jamie VanderVeeken on Dec. 7, atoned for a third period mistake to score in overtime and lift the Majors to a 3-2 win over the Hounds on Sunday afternoon in Toronto.

With the Majors leading 2-1 in the third period, Larsh turned over the puck to Andrew Desjardins, who beat Majors goaltender Justin Peters to tie at game at 2-2 and force the overtime session.

Larsh's goal marked the second consecutive game he has scored the game winner as the Majors have now won three games in a row.

After John Adams gave the Majors a 1-0 first period lead with a power play goal, Blair Jarrett scored his 16th of the season in the second period to tie the game. Cory Vitarelli scored minutes later to send the Majors into the intermission with a 2-1 advantage.

Alexei Ivanov and Nathan McIver recorded two assists each for the Majors.

Kyle Gajewski made his third consecutive start in goal for the Greyhounds and kicked aside 31 of 34 shots. The Greyhounds also fired 34 shots at Peters.

The game put an end to a seven-game road swing for the Greyhounds as the team will return home for a pair of games following a one week holiday break.

After collecting seven of a possible 14 points on the road swing, the Greyhounds maintain a hold of first place in the Ontario Hockey League's west division with a 15-15-5-1 record.

The Plymouth Whalers sit two points behind with two games in hand while the Windsor Spitfires have fallen into third place, four points off the pace.

The Greyhounds will host the Saginaw Spirit on Tuesday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. at Memorial Gardens before entertaining the Kitchener Rangers two nights later at 7 p.m.
