The Soo Greyhounds may have dropped a 5-4 decision to the Plymouth Whalers, but they did gain ground in the Ontario Hockey League’s West Division.

The Hounds dropped a shootout decision to the Whalers but gained a point on the idle Sarnia Sting to move into second spot in the division. The Hounds record moved to 2-1-0-1 on the season with the loss.

Steve Ward and Chris Terry opened the scoring for the Whalers, putting them ahead 2-0 lead. A late first period goal by Dustin Jeffrey cut into the lead and then added a second goal in the second to tie the game. Dan Collins put the Whalers ahead 40 second after Jeffrey’s second goal only to see Tyler Cuthbert tie the game late in the period.

Tom Sestito scored early in the third period to put the Whalers head 4-3. Matt Lyall tied the game for the Hounds with just over two minutes remaining in the third.

After a scoreless overtime period, James Neal scored the lone shootout goal to give the Whalers the win. Chris Terry also shot for the Whalers but was denied by Hounds netminder Matt Hache. Jeffrey, Cuthbert, and Lyall all shot for the Hounds but were denied by Whalers goaltender Michal Neuvirth.

The Hounds went 1-for-7 on the power play on the night.

Next action for the Hounds will be on Sunday afternoon when they face the Sarnia Sting at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre.
