The Soo Greyhounds received a boost on Sunday, but it also will force the team to make a move.
Defenceman Mac Hollowell was returned to the Greyhounds on Sunday after participating in the training camp of the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies.
A draft pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Hollowell was reassigned by the team and attended the Marlies camp before being sent to the Greyhounds on Sunday.
The move leaves the Greyhounds with four overage players, including goaltender Tyler Johnson, defenceman Jordan Sambrook and forward Keeghan Howdeshell in addition to Hollowell.
League rules permit teams to carry more than three overage players early in the season but can only dress three for games. Teams are required to get down to three overage players by the trade deadline.
As it stands, Rasmus Sandin remains in the mix with the Marlies after the latest round of cuts.
Sandin, who spent the 2017-18 season with the Greyhounds on loan from his team in Sweden, has options as far as where he plays this season.
Because he spent last season with the Greyhounds on loan, Sandin is eligible to play this season in the AHL. Another possibility has him playing the 2018-19 season in Sweden with Rogle as he plays out his contract with the Swedish club.
