HOCKEY NOTES: North Stars sweep Sudbury

The Soo North Stars are now just two games away from the beginning of the second season.

With the team counting down the games until the first round of the Great North Midget League playoffs, the North Stars gained a convincing 7-3 win over the Sudbury Lockerby Confectionery Nickel Capitals at the John Rhodes Community Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The win follows a 4-2 victory over the Capitals on Saturday to move the North Stars to 30-2-0-2 with two games remaining in the regular season. With first place secured long ago, the North Stars have been anxiously awaiting the beginning of the playoffs on February 14th.

Michael D'Agostini and Matt Caria led the North Stars attack on Sunday with a goal and two assists each while Zack Torquato, Tyler Gendron, Kyle Rodgers and Matt D'Agostini each recorded a goal and an assist. Adam Kauppi scored the other marker while Travis O'Brien recorded the win in net.

The Soo led the game 4-0 after the first period and 7-0 after two.

The North Stars will enjoy a weekend off before hosting the Valley Easy Cobras in a pair of games to close the regular season. The locals will change venues for the series and play out of the Memorial Gardens at 7:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on February 7th and 8th, respectively.

*** TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS:

Cambrian Nissan/Green Belt Bingo captured the championship at the Toronto Penguins Winter International Classic on Sunday.

The local bantam minor AA entry completed a perfect 5-0 tournament record on the weekend with a 3-2 win over the Weston Hawks in the championship game.

Curtis Travaglini, who was named the tournament most valuable player, scored twice in the final including the tying goal and the winner while Andrew Trecroce added another. Jordan Lang recorded two assists while Michael Martens was credited with the win in net.

In five tournament games, the team gave up only four goals and recorded three shutouts with Kyle Labbe in net for two and Martens in for the other.

*** WILDCATS MOVE ON UP:

The Sault Female Pee Wee Wildcats have been moved up a division by the Ontario Women's Hockey Association last week after a torrent start to the season. The team has been moved up to the B division in Ontario Female Competitive Hockey after winning nine consecutive tournament games.

The Wildcats will face their new competition in a tournament in Durham on February 20th. The locals will also enter the provincials championships to be held in April.
