High school basketball title games postponed over social media post investigation

The title games for the city boy's high school basketball league have been postponed.

Makeup dates for the games, which were scheduled to be played on Tuesday at St. Mary's College, have not been announced.

Details on what led to the postponement are limited at this point.

Lucia Reece, Algoma District School Board director of education, confirmed the postponements in an emailed statement.

“We are investigating a matter involving a social media post," Reece said. "As it is an active investigation, we are not able to disclose any details at this time.”

Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board director of education Danny Viotto added that the postponement is to provide additional time to fully investigate the issue.

"There is an investigation taking place related to an online post. Since more time is required to fully investigate this matter the games have been postponed," Viotto said in an email. "With this being an active investigation we are not able to disclose any further details. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we ensure due process is followed.”

The junior final is slated to see the St. Mary's Knights face the White Pines Wolverines.

The Knights are coming off a semifinal win on home court over Superior Heights while the Wolverines advanced to the title game thanks to a win over Korah at Korah.

At the senior level St. Mary's also advanced to the city final at the senior level thanks to a win over Superior Heights, beating the Steelhawks in semifinal action at Superior Heights.

The Knights will take on the Korah Colts in the senior final after Korah picked up a semifinal victory over White Pines on home court.
