The Soo Greyhounds coughed up a big lead but rebounded to score a huge win over the Windsor Spitfires on Thursday night.
After grabbing a 4-0 lead early in the second period, the Greyhounds watched the Spitfires rally to tie the game at 4-4. But the Hounds scored two goals 46 seconds apart late in the third period to score a 6-4 win.
The win allows the Greyhounds to jump five points ahead of the Plymouth Whalers, who hold a game in hand, in the race for the Ontario Hockey League's west division crown. Windsor now falls seven points off the pace and have played one more game than the Hounds.
Tyler Kennedy opened the scoring for the Greyhounds just 1:05 into the contest before Martin Tuma and Andrew Desjardins scored to put the visitors ahead 3-0 after one period.
Jeff Carter added another goal on the power play 46 seconds into the second period before the Spitfires began to claw their way back.
David Lomas, Brett Liscomb and Steve Downie scored second period goals to draw Windsor to within one at 4-3. Cal O'Reilly tied the game 39 seconds into the third period.
With 5:46 remaining in regulation time, Chris Lawrence scored the winner when he knocked in a rebound off a Carter shot while on the power play.
Jason Pitton salted away the game 46 seconds later when he collected a turnover just inside the Windsor zone and fired a shot past Windsor goaltender Brad Topping.
Jordan Smith recorded three assists for the Greyhounds while Lawrence setup a pair. Carter and Pitton added an assist each while Kyle Gajewski took the win in goal.
The Hounds conclude their two-game road trip on Friday night in Sarnia before returning home to face the Whalers in another important contest on Sunday at Memorial Gardens beginning at 7 p.m.
