Greyhounds select 15 players at OHL draft

With the 13th overall pick at the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection draft on Saturday morning, the Soo Greyhounds selected centre Jordan Mayer from Greater Kingston in the first round.

With the 13th overall pick at the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection draft on Saturday morning, the Soo Greyhounds selected centre Jordan Mayer from Greater Kingston in the first round.

The 15 year-old taken out of the minor midget program, stands at 5-foot-9, weighs in at 165 pounds and averaged over a point-per-game in 29 contests this past season accumulating 30 goals and 25 assists for 55 points.

Mayer (pictured) is a native of Kingston.

"Mayer is a very skilled two-way centre who performs and competes at a very consistent level. He possesses very good feet and is a smooth skater who has great acceleration. He always plays at high speed and reads the game well. He finds the open ice, and works to get himself into a position to be an offensive option. When he gets possession of the puck he shows a ton of composure,” states OHL Central Scouting.

*** SECOND ROUND:

With the 13th pick, 33rd overall, the Greyhounds dipped into the Great North Midget League talent pool by grabbing centre Jamie Haines from the Valley East Cobras.

In 36 games played, Haines had 30 goals and 31 assists good for 61 points along with 144 penalty-minutes.

The 6'1", 175lb left centre is described as a big, strong aggresive forward with good hands who will finish. His toughness and grit helps round out this skilled player.

*** THIRD ROUND:

The Greyhounds had the 12th and 15th picks in this round at 52nd and 55th overall.

With the first pick, the Hounds selected their third centre of the draft by taking Michael Fine from the Mississauga IceDogs minor midgets.

With the second choice, the Greyhounds hope to have helped address their future goaltending needs by taking Bryce O'Hagen from the Burlington Eagles minor midgets.

In 76 games, Fine grabbed 32 goals and 54 assists for 86 points. The North York, Ontario native stands 5'11" and weights 200 lbs.

"A tough, skilled center who plays a very effective two way game. He competes hard each and every shift while displaying a good level of skill and hockey sense. He reads the game well and is always moving his feet, rarely getting himself in trouble by standing still. He possesses very good puck handling ability making him very hard to knock off the puck. Works well along the walls," states a scouting report on the newest Hound.

O'Hagan, who is 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds, appeared in 34 games, posting 4 shutouts and a 1.97 GAA.

*** FOURTH ROUND:

The Greyhounds had the seventh pick, 67th overall, and took their first defenseman by going south of the border to take John Ramage from the St. Louis midgets.

Ramage scored five goals and added 15 assists in 44 games.

"Ramage is a player that competes and just plays hard all the time. He plays in all situations and gets a ton of ice time. He plays aggressively and has tight gap control. He maintains pretty good defensive positioning, always keeping the play in front of him. Ramage competes all the time, finishes all his checks and battles along the walls and in the corners," says the scouting report on the six-foot, 180 pounder.

*** FIFTH ROUND:

The Greyhounds did not have a pick in this round.

*** SIXTH ROUND:

The Greyhounds had the first and 13th picks in this round at 101st and 113th overall.

With their first choice, the Hounds nabbed defenseman Michael Montrose from the Detroit Little Caesars U-16s beforing picking hulking left winger Kyle Lapenskie, who stands at 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, from the Thunder Bay Kings.

Montrose, a Howell, Michigan native, stands 5'11" while weighing 150 pounds. Lapenskie from Terrace Bay is a played this past season with the Thunder Bay Kings Minor Midgets. In 64 games, he had 50 goals, 25 assists for 75 points along with 107 penalty minutes.

*** SEVENTH ROUND:

With the 13th pick, 133rd overall, the Hounds went back to the Great North Midget League and took left winger Jordan Carroll from the Valley East Cobras.

From Hanmer, the 5-foot-9, 150 pound Carroll becomes the second member of the Cobras to be selected by the Hounds. Jordan played along side second round pick Jamie Haines. In 33 games, Carroll had 22 goals and 23 assists for 45 points and 58 penalty minutes.

*** EIGHTH ROUND:

The Greyhounds did not have a selection in this round.

*** NINTH ROUND:

With the 173rd overall pick, the Greyhounds went back to the Detroit hockey system and took defensmean Mike Miller from the Honeybaked Midgets.

*** 10TH ROUND:

The Greyhounds took U.S. Under-18s goaltender Bradley Phillips with the 13th pick, 193rd overall.

*** 11TH ROUND:

With the 213th overall pick, the locals chose left winger Patrick Stillar from the Burlington Eagles minor midgets.

*** 12TH ROUND:

The Greyhounds went back to the Motor City with the 233rd overall pick by taking defenseman Kevin Albers from the Detroit Belle Tire's U-16s.

*** 13TH ROUND:

Central Ontario Wolves six-foot, 180 pound minor midget defenseman Riley Austin became OHL property of the Greyhounds with the 253rd overall selection.

*** 14TH ROUND:

With the 13th pick, 273rd overall of the round, the Hounds took six-foot, 185 pound defenseman Justin Ainsle from the Grey-Bruce Minor Midgets.

*** 15TH ROUND:

The Greyhounds final pick of the draft is was used to select left winger Brett Hope from the Chatham-Kent Cyclones minor midgets 293rd overall.
