Greyhounds 50/50 draws net $139K for local minor hockey

The Soo Greyhounds Hockey Club is proud to announce that $139,118.99 was raised this past 2022-23 season through 50/50 draws held at the teams regular season home games.

“The Soo Greyhounds are pleased to be able to support both girls and boys hockey in the local community”, stated Tim Lukenda, president of the Soo Greyhounds.

“The contributions from our 50/50 draw have made a meaningful difference to the financial condition of these organizations,” he added.

All funds raised supported three leagues – Sault Major Hockey Association, Soo Pee Wee Hockey League and Sault Female Hockey Association.

The Sault Major Hockey Association’s involvement with the 50/50 program plays a pivotal role in the funding of our association. The 50/50 program goes a long way in allowing us to continue to enhance the quality and availability of hockey programs to families in our community. Our involvement with the 50/50 provides us with the resources to ensure we offer successful and affordable hockey programs for local youth that emphasize skills, teamwork and community. We feel very strongly that our hockey programs help build solid foundations for our youth and our association would not be able to provide successful hockey programs without our involvement in the 50/50 program.

As far as our association is concerned, SFHA is very grateful for the opportunity.  We are trying to build sustainability into the Association and if we passed the “true” costs to the parents and families, the fees for them would be quite high and potentially prevent girls from playing girl’s hockey. There are no board positions which are paid as all are volunteer positions.

Again; on behalf of the SFHA board, we thank you for your continued support of girls’ hockey and assisting our board financially via the 50/50 draws.

The Soo Pee Wee hockey league is grateful to the Soo Greyhounds and all the fans for supporting the 50/50 over the years. This fundraiser has allowed us to add programs like goalie schools and power skating to help with the development of our over 1,000 players.  Without the 50/50 these costs would have to  be taken on by the parents. We know hockey is not a cheap sport to play and the 50/50 helps us try to keep it as affordable as we can.

The Soo Greyhounds would like to thank all of their fans for their support of these draws and contributions to supporting minor hockey in Sault Ste. Marie.
