Golfers battle elements in opening round

Three players share the lead after Thursday's opening round while the four local competitors all find themselves near the rear of the pack.

David McKenzie, Tony Carolan and Steve Marino share the lead at 3-under par. Six others sit one shot off the pace at -2.

Locals Richard Evoy and Frank Kucher shot an 8-over 78 on the par 70 course to sit tied for 139th in the 156-man field. Jeff Hamilton shot a 12-over par 82 for a share of the 152nd spot while Paul Raycroft shot a +13 for a tie for 155th.

Evoy collected 10 bogeys and two birdies while Kucher shot five bogeys, two double bogeys and a birdie. Hamilton carded nine bogeys, two double bogeys and a birdie while Raycroft shot two bogeys, two double bogeys, a triple bogey and a quintuple bogey.

Each has a chance to regroup for today's second round. Hamilton tees off from the first tee at 8:50 a.m. while Evoy begins from the 10th at 12:50 p.m. Raycroft starts from the 10th tee at 2:20 p.m. followed by Kucher from the first at 2:30 p.m.

The Golf Channel, local cable 54, will televise live action from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today through Sunday's final round.
