Revenge had the sweet taste of gold for the Calgary Northstars in the Air Canada Cup championship game.
After taking a 7-0 thumping in the opening game of the AAA midget national championship from College Antoine-Girouard, Calgary steamed past the Quebec representatives 5-1 in the title game to win the Air Canada Cup on Sunday afternoon at Memorial Gardens.
Despite outshooting College Antoine-Girouard 12-3 in the first period, Calgary found themselves down a goal after Alexandre Imbeault scored at the 17:25 mark of the first period.
Jay Beagle tied the game for Calgary on the power play in the second period.
Matt Robinson scored 29 seconds into the final period to lift Calgary into a lead they would not relinquish. Jesse Smyke, Justin St. Louis while short handed and Tyler Swanson also scored for Calgary. Ryan Armstrong also added a pair of assists for the winners.
In the bronze medal game, Brad Smith scored his second goal of the game with less than a minute left in the first overtime period to give the St. John's Maple Leafs a 5-4 win over the Yorkton Harvest.
David Lewis, Sean Wadden and Blake Careen also scored for St. John's while Ted Purcell and Colin Greening added two assists each.
Scott Woytas, Clayton Geiger, Michael Holmes and Dallas Thomson scored for Yorkton with Neil Kodman adding a pair of assists.
