Aubry scores LSSU's lone goal

Oct. 7 - SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State's return to its first hockey home -- Pullar Stadium -- ended with a 3-1 loss to Lakehead.

The Lakers opened the 2006-07 season with an exhibition game against the Thunderwolves, whose stop in Sault Ste. Marie was the last of a three-game road trip that included contests at Minnesota-Duluth on Thursday and Michigan Tech on Friday. The T-Wolves improved to 2-3 for the year.

LSSU, which had eight new players in the lineup, out-shot Lakehead 36-32, but finished 0-for-11 on the power play. The Thunderwolves were 1-for-2 with the man-advantage.

Lakehead's Jeff Richards opened the scoring with a goal at 14:34, but LSSU answered at 17:08 when freshman Pat Aubry scored on an assist from senior Dominic Osman.

Richards scored again at 10:58 of the second period, and teammate Mathieu Maissoneauve made it 3-1 with a power-play goal at 1:36 of the third period.

Lakehead goalie Chris Whitley totaled 35 saves, including 15 in the opening period. LSSU starting netminder Jeff Jakaitis allowed two goals and stopped 21 shots through two periods. Freshman Pat Inglis stopped eight of nine shots in the third period.

Approximately 1,500 fans turned out to watch the Lakers play at Pullar Stadium for the first time since 1976. LSSU played at the Pullar for 10 seasons before moving to what is now Taffy Abel Arena in 1976. ************************************************************
