Football Notebook: NFC and OVFL champs crowned

Both the Northern Football Conference and Ontario Varsity Football League crowned their champions on Saturday. In the OVFL, the Etobicoke Eagles came away with a narrow 15-14 victory over the Niagara Spears.

Both the Northern Football Conference and Ontario Varsity Football League crowned their champions on Saturday.

In the OVFL, the Etobicoke Eagles came away with a narrow 15-14 victory over the Niagara Spears. The loss marked the first loss of the season for the Spears, who entered the playoffs as the league’s only perfect team. The Eagles, after enjoying a first round bye as the Central Division champions, defeated the Mississauga Warriors and the Toronto Thunder to reach the championship.

In the Northern Football Conference title game, the Oshawa Hawkeyes, who defeated the Sault Steelers to earn he championship berth, scored their second road win of the playoffs as they defeated the Milton Marauders 20-17.

The Hawkeyes’s Evan Davis scored on a six-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter to give the Hawkeyes the win. The Marauders finished the night with 197 yards passing along with 83 yard rushing. The Hawkeyes offense geared around the run as the newly-crowned NFC champions earned 161 yard rushing while adding 91 through the air.

The game MVP’s were Milton’s Jon Nedeljkovic offensively. Nedeljkovic had 94 yards rushing on 16 carries and a touchdown. He added a 20-yard reception in the loss. Defensively, Oshawa’s Hughroy Simms had five tackles and a tackle for a loss to earn defensive game MVP honours.
