The Sir James Dunn Eagles suffered a disappointing end to a fabulous season of football.
After going undefeated the through the local high school football league regular season, the Eagles captured the city championship before advancing to a Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) championship with wins over Sudbury Lockerby and North Bay West Ferris.
In the Central Bowl on Saturday at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, the NOSSA champion Eagles fell to Barrie's Bear Creek Kodiaks 41-21 in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) sanctioned event.
The Kodiaks' win marked the first time in the Bowl's five-year history that a Sault team failed to return home with the championship trophy.
Despite a change in rules where the game was played with three downs instead of the four played locally, the Eagles were forced to contend with the Kodiak's ground attack that gained a total of 390 yards.
The Eagles fell behind early and trailed 14-0 in the first quarter. The Kodiaks led 21-7 going into the halftime break.
Kofi Osei, Matt Irving on a punt return and quarterback Frank Weise on a sneak scored touchdowns for the Eagles. Irving also booted three converts.
The Eagles rushed for over 200 yards as a team and passed for over 50 yards.
* NORTHERN BOWL: In the inaugural Northern Bowl also held at Laurier, the West Ferris Trojans nipped Thunder Bay's Hammarskjold 27-22.
