COLLEGE NOTES: Cougars gain men's win, volleyball sweep

The Sault College Cougars returned home with a victory for the men's basketball team and a two-game sweep for the women's volleyball team.

The Sault College Cougars returned home with a victory for the men's basketball team and a two-game sweep for the women's volleyball team.

The Cougars joined the Algoma University Thunderbirds on the road for Ontario Colleges Athletic Association games against Redeemer College and Niagara College on the weekend.

The Sault College women's basketball squad along with both the Algoma men's and women's basketball teams dropped each of their two games.

In volleyball, the Cougars sweep Redeemer in three sets on Friday before taking three of four sets from Niagara on Saturday.

The Cougar men's basketball team opened with a 75-64 win over Redeemer as Ron Kelly led the Sault with 17 points while Ryan Court, Jordan Sanders and Nathan Whalen all added 14 each.

On Saturday, the Cougars dropped a close 89-85 decision to unbeaten Niagara in overtime to fall to 3-2 on the season. Kelly scored 31 points while Sanders added 20 and Whalen 14.

The Sault College women's basketball team fell 66-58 to Redeemer and 80-34 to Niagara to drop to 0-5 on the season.

For Algoma, the men's team lost 57-26 to Niagara and 60-56 to Redeemer while the women dropped their games 82-49 to Niagara and 62-57 to Redeemer. Both teams drop to 0-5 on the season.

Sault College will visit Algoma's George Leach Centre on Friday as the men's and women's basketball teams renew their cross town rivalries in OCAA play. The women's game will tip-off at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.
