Charity hockey game to honour Colin Desmoulin

The St. Mary's Knights hockey team will honour lost teammate Colin Desmoulin in a charity game Friday against the NOJHL's Soo Thunderbirds.

The first ever Dezzy Cup will take place at the John Rhodes Community Centre on Friday at 3:15 p.m.

On November 14, Desmoulin’s pickup truck collided head on with a tractor trailer on Highway 17 North near Pancake Bay Provincial Park.

“We’re a band of brothers. The season is just starting off, but there’s no doubt he left a huge impact on this team and everyone is very saddened by the news. We’re trying our best to cope with this tragedy,” Knights’ assistant coach Frank Medaglia told SooToday in a story the day after the collision.

There was great outpouring of support following the 17-year-old’s death from the Sault’s hockey community, area school boards, and beyond.

“It’s touching to see it has extended past the hockey brotherhood. We lost a good boy,” Medaglia said.

Admission to the game is $2 and donations to Breaking Away will be accepted at the door.

Breaking Away, a not-for-profit program for adults with developmental disabilities, was always close to Desmoulin’s heart, and all proceeds from the Dezzy Cup will go to support the organization at the request of his parents Sandra and Barry.
