CASS defends North Shore track title

The Central Algoma Secondary School Huskies clawed their way to a narrow two point victory to claim their second consecutive North Shore Track and Field Championship.

CASS captured the aggregate title with an 860-858 win over Manitoulin Secondary School.

Some 35 Huskies are among the several athletes from the north competing in the Northern Ontario Secondary Schools Association (NOSSA) championships in North Bay on Thursday and Friday.

Shaun Siemers and Ryan Kent paced the Huskies in the senior boys division with three gold medals each to share the individual championship.

Siemers captured top honours in the 110 metre hurdles, long jump and triple jump while Kent emerged victorious in the 400 metre hurdles, 400 metre and 800 metre sprints.

David Hoover also captured gold in the high jump while Kurtis McClelland won the 200 metres. In the junior boys division, Kyle Gilbertson and Corey Marques also captured three gold medals each to share the individual points title.

Gilbertson won the 400 metre sprint, long jump and triple jump while Marques claim victory in the 800 metres, 1,500 metres and 3,000 metre sprints.

Other junior boys gold medalists were Rob MacKay in high jump, Jeremy Hodgson in the shot put and Rob Hurley in the discus.

Dana Bordeleau won the individual points title in the junior girls division with wins in the 80 metre hurdles, long jump and triple jump.

Meagan Seabrook won twice in the 100 metre and 200 metres while Carolyn Brooks won the shot put and Ashley Heubner the Javelin.

In the senior girls, Darris Ford emerged a double winner in the 100 metre dash and 100 metre hurdles. Michaela Whitley won the high jump.

In midget girls, Cassie macFarlane won the discus, Micaela Gilbertson the triple jump, Karli Celetti the long jump and Shelby Coulter the 80 metre hurdles.

Brook Moreau won gold in the midget boys long jump.
