Soo Greyhounds captain Jeff Carter was one of 22 players selected on Tuesday to represent Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships.
Carter along with five other players from the Ontario Hockey League will make up this year's edition of the National Junior Team that will open the tournament on December 26th against Finland in Helsinki, Finland.
Described as a big and fast club, Team Canada returns only two players from last year including Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and team captain Daniel Paille from the Guelph Storm.
Other OHL players on the team include defenseman Kevin Klein from Guelph along with forwards Tim Brent from the Toronto St. Michael's Majors, Mike Richards from the Kitchener Rangers and Anthony Stewart from the Kingston Frontenacs.
Klein is only member of the defensive corps that is not from the Western Hockey League. All together, the WHL sent 10 players, the OHL six, the QMJHL three, the NHL two and the NCAA one.
Other notables on the team include rookie sensation Sidney Crosby, Brett Burns from the Minnesota Wild and Michigan Wolverines star Jeff Tambellini.
Meanwhile, Carter will miss the next seven games for the Greyhounds while in Finland. Carter will not return to the Greyhounds line-up until January 9th.
Carter is the first Greyhound to play for Canada since Joe Thornton and Ric Jackman were selected in 1997. Petr Taticek participated with the Czech Republic last year.
*** HOUNDS MAKE A DEAL:
The Greyhounds made a minor move on Tuesday with the club sending forward Mike Moher to the Ottawa 67's in exchange for a 10th round selection in the 2004 OHL draft.
A former fourth round pick in 2001, Moher is currently with Tier two Jr. A Gloucester after playing in 17 games with the Hounds last season.
