Braves grab win over Eagles in final seconds

The Bawating Braves are back on the winning track.

With 27.6 seconds remaining in the game, Brad Beatty booted a punt through the end zone from the 10 yard line to score a rouge, break an 8-8 tie and secure a 9-8 Braves win over the Sir James Dunn Eagles on Thursday night in High School Football League senior division action at Rocky DiPietro Field.

After the Eagles built an 8-0 lead in the opening quarter, Bawating's Dan Vaz set up the comeback with an eight yard touchdown run to open the fourth quarter. Ryan Lecuyer hauled in the two point convert pass from Mike Storozuk to tie the score.

Both the Braves and Eagles now sit at 1-2 on the season.

Peter McGonegal scored for the Eagles on a six yard run while Nick Wegener kicked a convert and a 43 yard punt single.

Vaz finished with 111 yards rushing on 22 carries while Storozuk added 66 yards on 15 carries. Storozuk also completed six of 14 passes for 100 yards including five strikes to Joe Storozuk for 67 yards.

Defensively, Doug Watt led the Braves with 8.5 tackles while Lecuyer added eight, David Pipoli 6.5 and Zach Clement six. Mike Storozuk made four tackles and recovered a fumble while David Guiletti recorded an interception.

For the Eagles, McGonegal finished with 130 yards on 24 carries while quarterback J.J. Bergamin rushed for 28 yards and threw for 59 yards from four completions on 12 attempts.

Navarre Cellini and Ryan Walker led the defense with 6.5 tackles each while Steve Running added 5.5, Tyler Brown recorded an interception and McGonegal recovered a fumble.

*** JUNIOR DIVISION:

Jarvis Milne, Jimmy Castellani, Aaron Robinson and Bryan Babic scored touchdowns for the Eagles in a 31-8 win over Bawating.

Robinson added a field goal and four converts. Jacob Running replied with the touchdown for the Braves while Jesse Hill added the two point convert.
