Bantam Hounds put in another solid performance

The Soo Bantam Greyhounds may not have lit the red light as much as they wanted but they continued to prove to be the top team in the Bantam AAA Major division at the 24th Annual Steel City International Hockey Tournament.

The Hounds improved to 2-0 in the tournament with a 2-0 victory over Detroit's Motor City Jr. Chiefs on Friday afternoon at Memorial Gardens.

The victory also marked the team's second shutout after beating Marathon's North Shore Mercs 13-0 in the tournament opener.

Jerry Petingalo provided all the offense the Greyhounds would need over Motor City with an unassisted effort 1:25 into the second period of play. Mike Rivard capped the scoring with a power play goal midway through the third period.

Despite only scoring twice, the Bantam Hounds controlled the majority of the play as Justin Hogsden cruised to the shutout in goal.

"I think we controlled the puck 90 per cent of the game," said Greyhounds head coach Dominic DeLuca Jr. "Their goaltender (Kyle Washer) played very well. Our kids played very well and our cycle down low really controlled the game. We had a lot of scoring chances but we ran into a hot goaltender."

The Greyhounds are back in action again on Friday against North Shore at 8 p.m. at the Pee Wee Arena.

On Saturday, the Greyhounds have a single game against Motor City at 4:30 p.m. at Memorial Gardens.

Should the Bantam Hounds secure first place in the division, they will skip a semi-final game and advance straight into Sunday's championship game.
