Niagara-on-the-Lake alpine skier Carter Simpson, who is originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., wrapped up competition at the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Italy this morning by winning a bronze medal in the Intermediate Slalom event, his second bronze of the games.
The day began with heavy snowfall and near white-out conditions causing low visibility at the Vialattea Resort in Sestriere, Italy, 101 km southwest of Turin, the host site of this year's games.
Officials made an early call that each skier would complete just one run instead of the traditional two, where his aggregate time would have been used for the standings.
That made Carter "super nervous," says his mother, a very proud and emotional AnnLiz Simpson. "I think because he knew he had one run to get it done. He skied the run he needed and even beat his qualifying time by four seconds."
Carter narrowly edged out his Canadian teammate Ron Greenhorn by 0.72 seconds with his time of 37.92 to take third place. Another Canadian, Taylor Barth, won the gold medal, while Ekk Logren of Sweden placed second.
With his Special Olympics competition done, Carter and his family will enjoy the closing ceremonies in Turin then stay in Europe for some vacation time together in Italy and Switzerland. The will include, of course, lots of skiing.
