A sure sign of spring is when the water reaches 40 degrees Fahrenheit. You drift through the first pool of the year and see a silver bullet flash out from underneath the bank, grab your spawn sack and know that spring is here.
The steelheads, which are over grown rainbow trout, are in Lake Superior tributaries and biting. The water temperature is about 43 degrees Fahrenheit as of late last week. With the weather getting warmer, the biting is just going to get better.
The best temperature for steelheads is between 45 and the low 50's degrees. The warmer weather is also bringing the water down and clearing it up this will make the fish easier to narrow down.
If you plan to venture out this week to the Lake Superior tributaries, try a number of different tactics. Tie up a number of different size spawn sacks and bring some floats for the pools that have loges in them. This will help you from getting snagged because you are not dragging your bait across bottom, you are just floating above it.
This presentation will allow you to drift the spawn right in front of the steelheads face. After this happens, all you need is the steelhead to do its part. Do not forget to bring a lot of hooks and sinkers as they are very easy to lose. In addition, a few anglers have been catching steelheads on orange sponge.
From experience, the fish seem to be holding at the back of the pools that have faster moving water ahead of them. Also watch were your walking because the fish can be easily spooked when you think that there is no reason for them being where you are walking..
Get out there, hook into one of Lake Superior's silver bullets, and have a great time in the outdoors.
