The Algoma University men’s basketball team has its new coach.

After 12 years with Thomas Cory at the helm, Etienne Jacquet will take over the position.

Jacquet joins the team after serving as head coach at Thetford Basketball Academy in Quebec.

“I am excited about the opportunity to coach at the university level,” Jacquet said in a prepared statement. “I genuinely feel fortunate to pursue my dream and share my vision with a group of young men that will strive to improve and reach a high level of success on and off the court.”

While at Thetford, Jacquet won two provincial high school titles and a pair of provincial college titles in five years with the program.

Jacquet’s experience also includes a season as an assistant coach with the Ottawa Skyhawks, a Canadian pro team that played in the National Basketball League.

He also spent nine years as a coach at La Cite college in Ottawa.

Jacquet takes over for Cory, who left the program in June to take over the coaching position at Nipissing University.

The Algoma men will see a very different coaching staff from last season as Pat Murray, who served as an assistant coach with Cory, has also moved on after accepting the head coach position at Sault College in early May.
