The men's basketball team at Algoma University made school history on Saturday with a first-ever win in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play. Algoma, a second-year OCAA entry, ended a 16-game losing streak with a shocking 80-74 win over the Fanshawe Falcons. The Thunderbirds were 0-12 last season and lost four in a row to begin this one before finally hitting the win column against a Fanshawe team that left Sault Ste. Marie empty-handed this weekend. Fanshawe headed north this weekend with a perfect 3-0 record but lost 92-72 to the Sault College Cougars on Friday before being trimmed by Algoma on Saturday. Greg Sirie keyed the Algoma win with 21 points. He scored six of his points in the final 2:00 of the game to break a 72-72 tie. "This is a great feeling," said Sirie, who was with Algoma through the 0-12 season of a year ago. "We always hope to win and want to win but realistically, I didn't expect we would beat a team like Fanshawe who had come to town unbeaten." Adam Hawdon and Jason Trinier also had big games for Algoma with 20 points apiece. In women's action, Fanshawe scored a 93-58 win over Algoma. Jenn Ross with 25 and Carly Uhlman with 10 led the Thunderbirds, now 0-4 on the season. The Algoma women are still looking for their first OCAA win, having gone 0-10 last season.
