Algoma drops a pair to Mohawk

The Algoma University basketball program found themselves on the short end of a pair of games against Mohawk College at home on Saturday afternoon. The Algoma women dropped a 73-41 decision while the men suffered a 97-81 setback.

The Algoma University basketball program found themselves on the short end of a pair of games against Mohawk College at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Algoma women dropped a 73-41 decision while the men suffered a 97-81 setback.

In the women's game, Jessica King led all Algoma scorers with 13 points while Roberta Reid chipped in with 12. Susan Shaw-Davies led Mohawk with 22 points while Alexis Rakovac added 16.

Algoma trailed by just nine at the half, but struggled from the floor in the second half and fell behind further early on in the half.

In the men's game, a 26-point performance from Jason Trinier was not enough as the Algoma men fell 97-81. Trinier led all scorers in the game while Jarrell Hogan also had a strong outing for Algoma with 20 points, including 14 in the opening half.

Nicholas Gaspic and Panyin Kyei led Mohawk with 24 and 23 points respectively. Igor Trbujevic also chipped in with 19 points for Mohawk.

The Algoma men are back in action on Wednesday for a home game against Sault College beginning at 9 p.m. at the George Leach Centre.
