SILENT AUCTION, HOCKY REUNION HIGHLIGHT LAKE STATE CLASSIC

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – A silent auction of more than 40 items and a reunion of the 1966-67 Laker hockey team will be the featured highlights of the 17th annual Lake State Golf Classic set to tee off June 10-12 at the Otsego Club in Gaylord.

As always, funds raised from this year's classic, sponsored by Shane Woolever D.O. of Greater Peninsula Orthopedics, will be used for Laker athletic scholarships.

The Laker Silent Auction has become a focal point of this year's event, according to Tom Coates, LSSU Assistant Athletic Director. The auction includes a variety of items, such as a tour of the Detroit Red Wings locker room, a stint behind the Laker bench to coach the Laker hockey blue/white game, and a chance to be honorary ball boy/ ball girl at a Laker basketball game. Other items include a guided snowmobile tour of the Eastern U.P., learning the sweet secrets of making (and keeping) fudge, a tour and overnight stay at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum and a ride in a tugboat parade.

"Our volunteer committee came up with a great idea to improve our silent auction," said Coates. "They were motivated to secure items that will create competitive bidding and result in more assistance for student athlete grant-in-aid."

The Laker Silent Auction committee is chaired by Gary McClellan of Frankenmuth, with Tony Bosbous, Gil Somes, Rick Mick, Virginia Zinser and Coates, all of Sault Ste. Marie, serving on the board. All items are available for bidding from 8 p.m., June 11 through 2 p.m., June 12. A full listing of the auction items can be found at lssu.edu/foundation.

In addition to the auction, the weekend's events include a reunion of the first varsity Laker hockey team during the Sunday night social. The 1966 Lakers, coached by current Michigan State University Director Ron Mason, compiled a 15-5 record during that inaugural season. Players and staff who will be attending the event include Mason, Jim Booth, Jim Fuller, Archie Orazietti, Randy McArthur, Terry Thompson, Jack Theriault, Con Metro, Roger Traviglini and Bud Cooper, who was athletic director from that era.

"We are very excited to welcome back members of our first varsity hockey team," said Coates. "They built the foundation for our 40 years of Laker hockey heritage."

There is still time to enter a team in the Lake State Classic by calling the LSSU Foundation at 906-635-2665 or visiting www.lssu.edu/foundation.
