CITY OF SAULT STE. MARIE
******************************
The Mayor's Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) is looking for young persons who are passionate about making a difference in Sault Ste. Marie.
To serve on the council, youths must be between the ages of 14 and 24 and reside in/enrolled in secondary or post-secondary school in Sault Ste. Marie. Youths under the age of 18 will need the consent of a parent or guardian to apply.
“MYAC provides local youth with a meaningful opportunity to make a difference in their community and have a positive impact on their colleagues by advocating for issues, causes and organizations they are passionate about,” said Mayor Christian Provenzano.
“I have enjoyed working with MYAC, and it has been great to see the council progress since it was launched in 2014. I want to recognize the 2020-2021 committee, and thank the outgoing members for their contributions to our community. I encourage any interested local youth to consider submitting an application.”
The MYAC term will run from September until June. Meetings will be held either virtually or in-person once a month in the evenings or after school.
Youths interested in applying should expect a time commitment of between eight to 13 hours per month if they are selected for the council. For high school students, time spent on council activities can be used towards community service hours that are required to graduate
MYAC has an annual operating budget, and the committee is responsible for allocating these funds through capital projects, the MYAC Leadership Scholarship and the Youth Fund, a micro-grant program that provides financial support to programs, activities and events that benefit youth in the community.
“I have really enjoyed my time on MYAC,” said Celeste Bond, outgoing MYAC member.
“The committee provided me with the opportunity to further develop my leadership skills, learn more about municipal government and make a difference in the community by supporting organizations such as ACCANO, Every Breakfast Counts and Refugee 705. In particular, I was proud to be a part of the committee that developed the MYAC Leadership Scholarship, which will provide assistance that helps local youth access important education experiences.”
The deadline to apply is Aug. 31, 2021
