You asked: why do some local stores still offer plastic bags?

A city bylaw prohibiting stores from distributing plastic bags went into effect last month, so why do some retailers continue to offer them?

Since the city's ban on single-use plastics went into effect on Nov. 15, many SooToday readers have reported something retailers are still offering plastic shopping bags, while some restaurants continue to use plastic straws and cutlery.

Some readers have asked, if single-use plastics have been banned, why are they still available at some retailers?

Reached for comment, city spokesperson Tessa Vecchio said the bylaw banning plastic bags came into effect last month, but enforcement of that ban doesn't start until Aug. 8, 2023.

"There is an education period," said Vecchio.

On Feb. 8, the local ban on plastic cutlery, straws and other food service ware will come into effect.

Once enforcement begins, a $500 daily fine will be applied to those found guilty of the offence, up to a total of $10,000.
