Does the city put snow tires on buses?

The answer is yes, but fluctuating and icy road conditions over the past few days contributed to some sliding, regardless of tire type

SooToday received a comment from a reader asking why the city hasn't installed snow tires on transit buses.

The following response is from Nicole Maione, director of community services with the City of Sault Ste. Marie.

"Transit replaces all-season tires with tires that have enhanced traction for the winter season. This ensures buses can more effectively handle winter road conditions. The few buses that required tire swaps during the recent snowfall were replaced.

"However, fluctuating and icy road conditions over the past few days contributed to some sliding, regardless of tire type.

"As the city declared a significant weather event earlier this week, some transit routes experienced delays and had difficulty accessing routes that had not been plowed yet.

"Our priority is the safety of our passengers and drivers, and we are continually adapting to these challenging weather conditions to provide reliable service."
