Yankees give Lou Turco another heart attack

He eats whole-wheat bread with Becel. He hasn't had an Eatmore bar or a Kit-Kat in two weeks.

Ward 4 Councillor Lou Turco returned to the public forum last night for the first time since suffering a heart attack late last month.

Low-fat Lou was back at the Civic Centre for a Chamber of Commerce forum for Ward 4 City Council candidates.

The Sault's most unabashed sports fan turned out in his New York Yankees necktie (shown), joking that he'd watched the early part of last night's New York-Boston game and his favourite baseball club was "giving him a heart attack."

Turco returned home later to learn that his beloved Yankees lost 9-6 to the Red Sox, who are now just one win away from the World Series.

The affable politician has been sighted a lot lately at Station Mall, where he and wife Sandra walk for 20 to 25 minutes a day when the weather keeps them from taking their daily constitutional on the streets of Ward 4.

The salt shaker hasn't appeared at Turco's table since they put him on cardiac medication earlier this month.

His one indulgence: Coke in glass bottles

He hasn't touched chocolate either (Smarties and Coffee Crisp are also favourites), but he has been spotted in the low-fat ice cream department at Rome's.

Turco's been sampling all of the low-fat and no-fat ice cream brands, but has yet to find anything that even comes close to Ricardo's gelato.

One thing that he won't compromise on is his great love for non-diet Coke served in glass bottles.

For Lou, Coke's just not the same served in plastic, and he and Sandra have to go to Costco in Sudbury to pick up the hard-to find glass-bottled product.

"I knew he was starting to feel better when he said he wanted a Coke," Sandra tells SooToday.com.

One Lou Turco fan who's been keeping in touch is Montreal hockey legend Jean Beliveau, who wants to show Lou around the new Centre Bell and is holding Canadiens tickets for his next visit there.
