************************* Public Safety Canada: One of the ten most wanted criminals in the U.S. arrested by the Border Services Agency MONTREAL, QUEBEC -(May 13, 2007) - The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that Richard Steve Goldberg, a U.S. citizen wanted for close to six years in the United States, was arrested Friday night in Dorval.
The individual is one of the 10 most wanted criminals in the U.S.
U.S. authorities had issued a warrant for Goldberg's arrest in 2001 on charges of lewd acts on children and the production and possession of child pornography.
"One of our government's key priorities is to fight crime in order to keep our families, our children and our communities safe," said the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety. "Canada will not be a safe haven for pedophiles. This is something our government will not compromise on."
On May 11, 2007, the CBSA was notified by Interpol that Mr. Goldberg was located in a house in Dorval.
With the support of the Montreal Police Force's tactical squad, a CBSA investigator went to the address and arrested the individual under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for being in Canada illegally.
"I wish to congratulate the CBSA and the Montreal Police for their excellent work, which led to the arrest of this dangerous individual. This is another fine example of the diligence exercised by our officers who protect our borders and our communities," said Minister Day.
Mr. Goldberg will appear on Monday afternoon before the Immigration and Refugee Board, which will review the grounds for his detention. **************************
