UPDATE:

Ontario 511 is reporting the closure of Highway 17 north of the Sault on Sunday afternoon has been cleared.

Shortly before 5 p.m., the provincial traffic service removed the closure designation for the road.

Meanwhile, a winter weather travel advisory for the area also ended just before 5 p.m. for Batchawana Bay, Searchmont and Montreal River Harbour. However it remained in effect for the time being for areas to the east including Elliot Lake and Ranger Lake.

EARLIER REPORT:

A stretch of Highway 17 north of the Sault has been closed due to bad weather.

The Ontario 511 travel information service reported at around 2 p.m. Sunday that the highway was closed in both directions between Batchawana Bay and Wawa.

The notice comes shortly after Environment Canada issued a winter weather travel advisory just north of Sault Ste. Marie, including Searchmont, Montreal River Harbour and Batchawana Bay and up Highway 17 past White River.

The national weather agency said Sunday afternoon's disruption for travellers should be brief, lasting from four to six hours, but warned travel conditions could be hazardous.
