The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) is honoured to announce that its Director of Education, John Stadnyk, has been named recipient of the Ontario Catholic Supervisory Officers’ Association (OCSOA) 2016 CASSA-EXL Award.

The CASSA-EXL Award is given to one Ontario Catholic school board administrator annually, based on three criteria: dedication and enthusiasm in guiding children’s educational experiences; the scope and quality of children’s educational experiences and programs; and the creation of environments which effectively promote children’s attitudes toward learning and their perceptions of themselves as lifelong learners.

By being named the 2016 EXL Award winner by OCSOA, Mr. Stadnyk will be under consideration for the 2016 Xerox EXL Award as Superintendent of the Year at the annual conference of the Canadian Association of School System Administrators (CASSA).

As Director of the HSCDSB, Mr. Stadnyk has overseen the implementation of technology in all schools, the equitable allocation of resources to ensure student achievement and the installation of Reading Recovery in all elementary schools.

His work in that regard led to his receiving the 2014 Outstanding Leadership Award from the Canadian Institute of Reading Recovery.

Mr. Stadnyk has been also been a mentor for new Directors of Education, a representative on the English Catholic Council of Ontario Directors of Education provincial bargaining with OSSTF support workers and the Council of Directors of Education representative on Knowledge Ontario.

He has also served on the Ministry’s Committee for province-wide equitable allocation of Special Education funding.

Along with these extra voluntary duties, Mr. Stadnyk is a member of the Board of Directors for St. Vincent Place in Sault Ste. Marie and serves on the Patient Care Advisory Committee for the Sault Area Hospital.

He is a past member of the Board of Directors for the Algoma Regional Community Hospice.

“I am truly grateful to the OCSOA Board of Directors for this great honour in receiving the CASSA-EXL Award.  It is certainly a privilege to be recognized by my peers and professional association. I am very proud to be a member of such a prestigious organization,” said Stadnyk.

“I especially want to acknowledge and thank my nominator, Maria Esposito, whom I have worked alongside for fifteen years, and from whom and with I have learned so much.  I thank everyone who shared letters of support. I share this award with all of them,” added Stadnyk.

Mr. Stadnyk dedicated the award to his late wife Janis, who was a pillar of support through his entire journey in education, and his children Nick and Mary.
