Algoma District School Board receives Chapleau school consultation recommendation report at the June 12th regular board meeting

Algoma District School Board (ADSB) senior staff submitted recommendations at the regular board meeting on June 12th.

The board received the Chapleau School: Administrative Report with Recommendations for review and feedback with the intent of making a final decision on June 19, 2012.

In August, 2011, it was reported to ADSB senior administration that the ceiling in one of the classrooms on the third floor of Chapleau Public School had collapsed.

A full investigation was conducted and a report was issued by Elliott Engineering.

After considering a number of options, a recommendation was approved by the Board in October 2011 to relocate the JK-8 students and staff from Chapleau Public School into Chapleau High School for the 2011-2012 school year.

An advisory team made up of parents, students, staff, members of the First Nations community, principals and the Mayor of Chapleau, met throughout the year of transition and provided input to administration on areas such as transportation, social interaction amongst JK-12 students, renovations, and layout of the school to accommodate the JK-8 students.

ADSB Senior Administration held public meetings on April 30th and May 31, 2012 with parents and community members in Chapleau to discuss a more long-term strategy for the JK-Grade 8 students in Chapleau.

At the public meetings, ADSB staff shared information that came out of consultations with the Ministry of Education.

Information on three options was shared and input from those attending the meetings was sought.

Option #1

Explore the feasibility of renovating the existing elementary building

Option #2

Explore with the Ministry, the feasibility of building a new school (JK-8 or JK-6)

Option #3

Continue with a JK-12 model with additional renovations both to the interior and exterior of the high school building.

Following the consultation meetings with the community, all options were considered by senior administration prior to making their recommendations at the June 12, 2012 Regular Board meeting.

The Chapleau School Consultation: Administration Report With Recommendations was presented at the board meeting along with all material shared at the two public information meetings, including presentations, power points and minutes.

These materials have been posted on the ADSB website under the heading Chapleau Community Consultation

The community has been encouraged to review the material on the website in order to familiarize themselves with information gathered and shared.

Parents and community members are invited to provide further input before the June 19th ADSB Regular Board Meeting at which time the recommendation will be voted on by the Board.
