Matthew Shoemaker has been in the mayor's office for a full year now, having been officially sworn in on Nov. 15, 2022.
He campaigned on a promise to be transparent with the people of Sault Ste. Marie — and as part of that commitment, Shoemaker has been releasing six-month progress reports on key initiatives.
The latest instalment dropped this week.
The mayor stopped by our SooToday studio on Thursday to talk about his first year in office (and a lot of other newsworthy topics). The conversation covered plenty of ground, from the official opening of the new Downtown Plaza to the endless opioid crisis to the tragic shooting rampage that devastated the entire community on Oct. 23.
Shoemaker also talked about the city's efforts to keep up with soaring housing demands, what residents can expect in the upcoming budget process, and the latest headlines about the old hospital site.
For the record, the mayor also accepted a recent challenge from St. Vincent Place, which called on every local politician to volunteer "just once" at its Albert Street food bank.
