WATCH: Affordable housing a 'Top 3 issue' in Ontario election campaign

Tim Hudak, CEO of the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA), says voters need to press their local candidates about plans to build more affordable housing

Tim Hudak is CEO of the Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) and a former leader of the province's Progressive Conservative Party. So if anyone knows a thing or two about the affordable housing crisis — and how politicians respond to such hot-button issues — it's him.

On a recent episode of Inside the Village, a news podcast produced by Village Media, Hudak talked about the one question facing so many voters across Ontario: How will I ever afford a home of my own? (Especially when houses like this one in Guelph are selling for $117,000 over the asking price.)

"We do have an opportunity now because the provincial election is coming up," Hudak said on the podcast. "And I have not doubt that if you're in Simcoe or The Sault or in Niagara, where I'm from, home ownership and housing costs are going to be a 'Top 3' issue. So I encourage folks to go out and talk to their candidates of all political parties and say: 'What are you going to do to help my son or daughter, or me and my wife, have a chance to own a home that we can afford?' "
