Hot on the heels of last year's controversial traffic signal removals, city council will be asked next week to approve one more study.

Ward 4 Coun. Stephan Kinach and his ward-mate Marchy Bruni will propose a new study to determine whether we really need stop lights late at night.

The councillors are proposing a trial period during which some traffic signals would be converted to flashing red and yellow lights from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m.

The following is the full text of the Kinach-Bruni resolution to be presented to city council on Monday.

The meeting will be live-streamed on SooToday starting at 5 p.m. that day.

Traffic Lights

Mover: Coun. S. Kinach
Seconder: Coun. M. Bruni

Whereas council's goal is to have regular steady and smooth traffic flow; and

Whereas smooth continuous routes decrease aggressive driving, stunt driving and reduce idling emissions; and

Whereas traffic volumes are significantly lower during the late-night hours, particularly after 11 p.m., making the full operation of traditional traffic signals less necessary in certain locations;

Now therefore be it resolved that staff be requested to report back to council regarding a trial period for some traffic lights to switch over to flashing red and yellow lights between the hours of 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
