Walmart says that issues which caused the corporate retailer to deny provincial sales tax (PST) exemptions to status-carrying First Nations customers at its Sault Ste. Marie location have now been resolved.
First Nations customers who believe they were charged PST incorrectly can either return to the store on Great Northern Road with a receipt for a refund, or apply for a refund through the Ministry of Finance.
"Walmart values all our customers in Sault Ste Marie, including the many First Nations customers who shop our store. Recently, there was an issue with our point-of-sale system affecting PST exemptions, which may have impacted some First Nations customers. These issues are now fixed," said corporate affairs manager Felicia Fefer. "We apologize for any inconvenience this caused and will be reminding our associates of the various ways they can honour the PST exemption for First Nations customers, including workarounds. We will also be reaching out to Chief Dan Sayers to discuss his concerns."
More information on point-of-sale exemptions and rebates for Ontario First Nations can be found on the Ministry of Finance website.
